Predictive planning optimises patient safety

18 June 2010

Nick BurnsLet’s not mince words. Without a predictive capacity planning tool a hospital is running blind and putting both patient and staff safety at risk.

The current environment is that publically funded hospitals have to take what patients they get.  And at peak or quiet periods where they might have too many staff on leave, patient safety can potentially be seriously compromised.

Predictive tools are essential for patient safety. It is predictive technology that enables hospitals to anticipate patient loads in advance and be better equipped to have the right staff in place.

Peaks periods such as at Easter, Christmas, and so on, all have a potential patient safety risk. Using a traffic light system alerts the health provider to where they need to take action, and to what degree, i.e. two more staff are needed in this area.

Without this technology in place to help hospitals plan ahead, there will be times when the resourcing won’t meet patient demand, which could have potentially disastrous consequences.

Put simply, predictive planning is a no brainer.
