Bridging the communications gap with management

In my last blog I talked about moving from working in reactive day to day chaos, to proactively planning ahead for the predicted peaks and troughs. This is a critical change that needs to happen to manage hospitals of the future.

However, a major challenge that health professionals have is bridging the communications gap with management.

For example, being able to say with certainty that we’re under-resourced, or we’re over-resourced in one area and we can move staff to help elsewhere, is vital for the hospital to run smoothly.

Health professionals need tools to support them and enable them to demonstrate and recommend appropriate course of actions to clinicians and management, such as the discharge plans need to be focussed on to avoid serious gridlock over the weekend. Or to say with certainty that they have good plans in place for the upcoming holiday period.

At the end of the day it is about giving the best possible service to the patient, and with less risk to hospital staff, while satisfying managers that their budgets are well spent.

To plan ahead, hospitals need the support all staff. The first step is to make the status of the hospital visible, so irrespective of the role in the organisation, everyone is talking on the same page about the issues that are coming up.

Where we can help is by providing operational toolsets that help hospitals to meet their goals of managing more patients within a tightening budget, while enabling health professionals to be able to deliver care more safely and sustainably.
